Event attendees included no less than President Benigno S. Aquino III and DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, with both affirming the government’s intent to ensure Filipino workers everywhere of the commitment to the creation and implementation of comprehensive job and career-relevant programs. These programs not only seek to match jobseekers and workers to jobs and careers well suited to them, but are also aimed at giving returning OFWs the chance to find decent and ample jobs as well.
Daang Matuwid Employment Facilitation Programs
Reinforced during the Daang Matuwid term, these programs were featured various booths in the event. In the labor market information (LMI) booth the President was presented the enhanced PhilJobNet, the Philippine government’s official job portal. Secretary Baldoz, Bureau of Local Employment Director Dominique Tutay and LMI Division Chief Ruth Rodriguez looked on while partner representative Patricia Acepcion of the SFI Group was explaining the new features of the site. The president also saw the Cebu and Bohol youth beneficiaries of the JobStart Philippines, a groundbreaking youth employment facilitation program of DOLE. Returning OFWs who are now teaching in public schools through the “Sa Pinas Ikaw ang Ma’am/Sir” program were also met.
The private sector has actively participated in the event. San Miguel Corporation led in the showcasing of 50 companies with labor law Certificates of Compliance (CoCs). Meanwhile, Amarella Beach Resort, Wellmade Motors Development Corporation, and Saint Joseph Academy were the showcased as Productivity Awardees. Finally, NC II holders of mechatronics, bartending, and barista tec- voc specializations performed their respective skills such as flairing bottle tricks, mixing drinks, and automation, among others inside the TESDA Skills Demonstration Booth.
Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III, Mayor Jonas Cortes, Congressman Luigi Quisumbing, and DOLE-Region 7 Director Exequiel Sarcauga, accompanied the president in touring the exhibit booths.
Annual Labor Day Job Fairs
As the main activity of the Mandaue event, Job Fair areas were installed for participating jobseekers in their quest for career opportunities both locally and abroad. For the jobseekers, a Career Orientation was facilitated highlighting the labor market researches of the Department such as JobsFit LMI report 2013-2020, as well as other youth employment facilitation such as the Special Program or Employment of Students (SPES), Government Internship Program (GIP), and the JobStart Philippines.
Other services availed by eager jobseekers were the Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar by POEA, Diskwento Caravan of DTI, including free haircut and massage services.
The Mandaue City Job and Career Fair is just one of the 54 activities—most of which happening on the Laboy Day itself, 1 May 2016—prepared in celebration of the annual national holiday ommemorating the contributions that the Filipino workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country.
