Rigger

Riggers help operate machines that move heavy objects including steel plates, bundles of steel rods, drilling towers, platforms, and the heavy construction equipment used to build and take down steel structures.

Tasks

• Examine objects to be moved, estimate their size, shape and weight and decide on the type of equipment necessary;
• Erect cranes and mobile crane booms, and increase the height of tower cranes by bolting component parts in place and rigging cables;
• Splice ropes and cables to make slings and tackle;
• Erect structural steel for buildings or plant under construction;
• Erect precast concrete panels used on facade of buildings, etc;
• Ensure that safety requirements are met at all times.

Basic Educational Requirement

Although most employers require high school graduates, the trade can only be learned through apprenticeship.

Skills and Competencies

• Language skills sufficient to under stand written and verbal safety instructions;
• Ability to recognise own and others limitations in work situations.

Physical Attributes and Characteristics

• Physically fit, alert and agile;
• Able to work at heights;
• Able to use hand tools;
• Able to work as part of a team.

Salary/Compensation

A Rigger’s entry level salary ranges from P8,000 - P9,000 per month and may even go up to P10,000 per month for those highly-trained and experienced. In the US, the average monthly earning is $3,857.

Prospects for Career Advancement

Career advancement is dependent on pursuing additional training. Some riggers may advance to associated occupations such as crane operator and scaffolder provided the relevant certificate of competency is obtained.

Employment Opportunities

Riggers work in construction sites and are employed directly by a building and construction company or by a subcontractor. Since most riggers work in large construction sites, the demand for them is closely tied to the general state of the building industry.

Cost of Education *

Most companies would require at least a high school diploma in this occupation. Cost of a high school education in a public school approximately ranges from P5,000 to P10,000 for the entire secondary education.
